Resources for Teaching Online

As an organization fundamentally invested in the live event of theatre and performance, and the various forms of pedagogy that it demands, we are starting this open-source site for sharing discussions of the challenges, particular problems and issues that this poses for our disciplines, as well as developing best practices and shareable resources. Obviously for theatre, we’re looking not only at how we meet student outcomes in the face of such challenges, but also how some of our pedagogies might better engage with notions and issues around transmission and contagion. Even questions as seemingly simple as “Should warmup practices change because of hygiene?” raise issues that we don’t always consider.

This clearinghouse public document seeks to allow our members and interested groups to focus on the particular challenges for theatre and performance, which are so dependent on physical presence. For those of you who are developing such documents and practices, if you’d like to share them, please do so via emailing to us at onlineresources@athe.org — we’ll ensure that in hosting them online, we include citations of where they originated and maintain record of authors/intellectual property. 

We’ve also partnered with Digital Theatre+, who will be offering free trial memberships to all ATHE members. We’ll be hosting a series of virtual panel webinars with our members through their site to focus on these challenges, beginning with one about identifying particular challenges and then looking to set up a series of responsive sessions, on topics such as teaching movement online, the online acting classroom, etc.

Our performance-based focus groups have launched a virtual guest artist program. Further, we will use our YouTube channel to host teaching videos. Please send onlineteachingvideos@athe.org your 5-15-minute teaching videos via Google Drive or similar online hosting facility, NOT via WeTransfer or similar file transfer tool.

Please also send:

  • A short abstract for your video (200 words or less)
  • Your bio (100 words or less)
  • A note on copyright – i.e. explain to us how your video is copyright-compliant and only features contributions from people who are willing to give permission for the video to be posted on our YouTube Channel.

We will review your submission and be in touch to coordinate upload, if appropriate.

If you have an idea but are unsure if it is suitable, please get in touch with ATHE Journals Online Editor, Margherita Laera, at onlineteachingvideos@athe.org to discuss. This is an ongoing call. There are no deadlines. Submissions will be processed as soon as possible.

ATHE will continue to support our members through this and we are clear that these resources are being developed within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and our sharing of them is in no way a suggestion that such modes and methods of teaching provide equivalence or long-term substitutive possibilities for the in-person pedagogies of theatre, performance, and related disciplines.
