The Value of Electronic Publishing

As the benefits of electronic publishing increase, the ATHE-ASTR Joint Subcommittee on Non-Print Book Publishing recommends that, in programs where it is not already the case, criteria for tenure and promotion (as well as successful demonstration of proficient scholarship for non tenure-track faculty and graduate students) be expanded to include peer-reviewed electronic publications of substantial research projects on a par with print publications. The full white paper on the value of electronic publishing is available at this link.

1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure

In 1940, following a series of joint conferences begun in 1934, representatives of the American Association of University Professors and of the Association of American Colleges (now the Association of American Colleges and Universities) agreed upon a restatement of principles set forth in the 1925 Conference Statement on Academic Freedom and Tenure. This restatement is known to the profession as the 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure.

You can read the statement at this link from the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

The predecessor organization of ATHE (the American Theatre Association, ATA) was an endorser of the statement, and ATHE followed suit. You can see both endorsements at this AAUP link identifying endorsers.

Freedom of Expression in Educational Theatre

As a member of the Coalition for Theatre Education, ATHE endorsed a set of standards for freedom of expression in educational theatre: "Theatre educators and their students work at the confluence of two of the foundational values that support a free society: freedom of expression and the unfettered pursuit of knowledge. Yet too often educational theatre is confronted with external efforts to draw boundaries defining acceptable content. Where these constraints are undertaken without a sound artistic or educational purpose, they are acts of censorship that have the effect of stifling free expression and stunting the educational process."

Partner Benefits

ATHE believes that benefits should accommodate the changing demographics of American families. Specifically, we are advocating for the adoption of domestic partner benefits that demonstrate a commitment to non-discrimination in the support of the health and well-being of all faculty.
