ATHE is committed to hosting a virtual conference that will support the multiple needs of our members, including responding to the present moment; providing space for presentation and feedback; and conducting the annual business of the organization.

The conference will include material over two weeks: July 20-25 and July 27-August 1. Focus Group and Committee business meetings will be spread out between Monday and Wednesday and concurrent sessions will be programmed between Thursday - Saturday, with the bulk of conference taking part during the pre-scheduled conference meeting. We don’t expect anyone to join for all the time, and we’re anticipating that some material may be accessible to conference attendees asynchronously to allow you to engage as you wish.

While saddened that we won't be able to see each other in person to share with the culturally relevant city of Detroit, we now feel called to action, providing the space for us all to respond to our current national situation. We aim to look ahead, together, to our new reality, longing for community while staying safe in place.

Driving towards Connection, Humanizing the Digital Pedagogy

Spring 2020 presented a challenge to move theatre and performance classes online. While roadblocks abounded, innovation did too. This roundtable discussion / presentation will feature successful lesson plans, exercises, assignments, discussions, and other classroom techniques to share with the membership during this plenary.

Driving towards Connection, Envisioning Resilience in Performance

Theatre across the globe faces difficult choices for how to best connect with their audience while staying safe. Some academic theatre programs produced Zoom performances and/or radio plays in the last few months, professional theatre released past productions on YouTube, artists turned to virtual reality, and still other theatre practitioners debuted new ways of doing live performance. This roundtable discussion / presentation will feature instances of your innovations of performance and practice in the COVID-19 era that have been successful.
