The Career Achievement in Academic Theatre Award honors individuals who are known for remarkable scholarly and creative contributions to the field, whose work has passed the test of time with its original thinking, and whose service has proven significant in shaping the field and future of theatre and performance. Awardees are authentic role models to colleagues and students, nurture the careers of others, and are effective champions of diversity in theatre and education.This year’s award recipient is:
Maria Delgado is Professor and Director of Research at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London and Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Modern Languages Research, School of Advanced Study, University of London. She has published widely in the area of twentieth- and twenty-first century Spanish-language theatre and film and European theatre. Publications include ‘Other’ Spanish Theatres (2003, revised Spanish language edition 2017), Federico García Lorca (2008) and eleven co-edited volumes, including most recently Contemporary European Playwrights (2020) and Contemporary European Theatre Directors (2010, revised 2nd edn. 2020). She is co-editor of Contemporary Theatre Review and of two book series for Manchester and Cambridge University Presses. She has a long track record of work as a film programmer and curator for venues including the British Film Institute, the ICA and the Cine Lumière, including 23 years as a Spanish and Latin-American programme advisor for the London Film Festival. She writes and broadcasts on film and theatre for a range of outlets including Sight & Sound, The Theatre Times, European Stages and the BBC. She holds Honorary Life Memberships of the Standing Conference of University Drama Departments [SCUDD] and the Theatre and Performance Research Association [TaPRA] and is currently on the executive committee of the International Federation for Theatre Research www.mariadelgado.co.uk/.
