ATHE After Dark
Friday, August 4, 2017
Juvenal, a satirist during the roman empire, wrote “the people that once bestowed commands, consulships, legions, and all else, now concerns itself no more and longs eagerly for just two things - bread and circuses.” This phrase over the years has become a metonym used to refer to something, as extravagant entertainment, offered as an expedient means of pacifying discontent or diverting attention from a source of grievance. The conference committee would like to treat you to a bit of “bread and circuses” in this adult oriented evening of entertainment.
It is said that there is no shortage of adventures after dark in Sin City. Do you dare to discover if this is also true of ATHE After Dark? If so, come behind the curtain of the ATHE After Dark Cabaret.
Raucous rhythms and steampunk style from Savvy Birds and Retroscope Fashion houses will spice the runway. Current Theatrics will bring you a glimpse into the life of DJ Fixxx written by Vegas playwright Erica Griffin. Gibson Cima will take you on a soulful journey across the country of the heart. Kinetic Inspirations will explore spectacle, skin, shame and salvation in "Dichotomies of the Body". Sin City Opera will raise the phoenix of Brunnehilda from the ashes of Valhalla. And Giovanni Ortega of East/West Players shall retell the myth of Narcissus in the language of cabaret, infused with German, Spanish and Tagalog.
The evening begins with a complimentary hour of hors d'oevres and the entertainment will continue until 1am. The first hour (9-10) is a ticketed event and guest tickets are available for purchase. After 10 pm this event is open to all. One drink ticket will be provided to each ticketed guest (9-10) and a cash bar will remain open throughout the evening.
ATHE Presents Enchantment by the Pool
Saturday, August 5, 2017
It is family night at ATHE! This poolside party is child friendly and artistically engaging. See local performers from jokesters, to juggler, to banjos played in quest of tenure, the original "Little Mermaid" (Rusalka the water nymph) and a shadow puppet dragon with a mission. Enjoy stories told by two actors playing with a soundtrack, two actors in a scientific experiment, three actors rising out of the deep. The water will be our playground, Planet Hollywood's pool will only be limited by our imagination. Local performers from Margaritaville, the Underground Wonder Bar, TSTMRKT, and Sin City Opera as well as from the University of North Carolina and Northwestern University, will take you (and your little ones) to the strange lands of Academia, Antarctica, Russia and Serendipity's ocean, all without taking you out of the pool. Jump in with us; the water's fine!
All registered ATHE Conference attendees are invited to ATHE Enhancement by the Pool on Saturday evening between 7:30 – 9:30 PM.
