by ATHE President Henry Bial

ATHE is pleased to announce the release of its latest position paper, "The Value of Electronic Publishing for Scholars in Theatre and Performance." The white paper is the result of a collaborative effort between ATHE and the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR). In August 2012, ATHE Vice President for Research and Publication Robert A. Schanke appointed Scott Magelssen to chair a special subcommittee to consider how the rapid expansion of non-print publishing (online journals, websites, etc) has impacted tenure and promotion evaluations in theatre and performance studies. Through cooperation with ASTR President Heather Nathans, the subcommittee was established as a shared project between our two organizations. The joint subcommittee issued its preliminary report at the 2013 ATHE Conference. Following a period of open comment and feedback from members, the final report was formally approved by the ATHE Governing Council in January, 2014.

On behalf of the entire Association, I wish to thank the members of the subcommittee for their excellent work. They are:

Scott Magelssen, University of Washington, Chair
Sarah Bay-Cheng, University at Buffalo
Susan Bennett, University of Calgary, past ASTR Vice President for Publications
J. Ellen Gainor, Cornell University
D.J. Hopkins, San Diego State University
David Z. Saltz, University of Georgia
Henry Bial, University of Kansas, ATHE President (ex officio)
Heather Nathans, Tufts University, ASTR President (ex officio)
Robert A. Schanke, Central College (Emeritus), ATHE Vice President for Research and Publications (ex officio)

The subcommittee's report and recommendations can be found at this link.
