by Karen Jean Martinson, Secretary and Chair of the Electronic Technology Committee

What is the Electronic Technology Committee? Before being elected Secretary, I knew next to nothing about the committee that I have now chaired for four years. The ETC is “charged with facilitating and expanding opportunities for exchanging information and networking via digital technologies, and for advancing the use of technology in teaching and scholarship.” With the help of the many dedicated ATHE members who have volunteered their time to serve on this committee, we have used the ETC to consider how technology impacts our pedagogy, our creative practice, our research, and our interactions with the larger public. Some of our past highlights include assisting Sarah Bay-Cheng and David Saltz in obtaining an NEH grant to host a Digital Humanities Summer Institute at the University of Georgia in 2018, bringing the acclaimed ensemble Sister Sylvester to ATHE’s 2018 Boston conference for a lecture performance and a workshop, and hosting the exciting “Theatre Games for Astrophysicists” panel in Orlando this past summer.

This year, the ETC is primarily focused on curating conference sessions that consider the different digital tools available to us in higher education, from (the often-dreaded) Learning Management Systems to technologies that can be used to innovate our classrooms and our productions. Through our conference offerings, we hope to offer practical insights that contribute to a more robust pedagogy. Additionally, building off of a panel presented in 2018 that considered social media usage at conferences, we are also preparing a best practices document that we hope will prove useful to the membership. Technology plays an ever-increasing part in our work as theatre artists, scholars, and educators, and the ETC seeks to curate experiences for ATHE members that will allow us to maximize the possibilities and minimize the headaches of our digital existences. It is my privilege to serve as ATHE Secretary and ETC Chair - please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any ideas, suggestions, or questions
