Governing Council Welcomes Adjunct Instructors to ATHE

The field of theatre studies, like much of the arts and humanities is in a labor crisis. Many indicators suggest that the number of adjunct laborers in the academy has increased as the opportunities for fair labor conditions there have decreased—including both tenure line and stable contract positions. This reality is compounded by well-founded fear and anxiety: many arts professors and aspiring arts professors feel precarious on a daily basis. Over the last few years, an adjunct labor subcommittee and the Governing Council of ATHE, have committed ourselves to educating ourselves about labor conditions, finding ways to advocate for members and non-members alike who are in contingent positions and making ATHE more accessible for all members. We believe that these modes of advocacy are best launched together. And that they are best launched with the full knowledge of the specificity of conditions for theatre faculty in our institutions. Therefore I am excited to announce the following programs:

  1. A large scale, three part adjunct labor survey will be conducted in association with ASTR. This survey will include a short quantitative survey followed by a longer qualitative questionnaire and interviews with selected participants. We feel that this survey will give us the data we need to understand our field and advocate effectively. Adjunct faculty who choose to do part 2 and 3 of the survey will receive a free membership to ATHE for a year.
  2. We will offer a discounted rate for adjunct faculty to attend the 2016 and 2017 conferences on par with the rate for graduate students.
  3. ATHE will offer free access to the job bank for job seekers until further notice.
  4. We will offer a plenary panel at the 2016 conference about adjunct labor in Chicago that will be free and open to the public, with targeted invitations to adjunct faculty members in the Chicago area. We hope that we can offer this type of programming for local groups of contingent laborers at future conferences as well, as we visit different areas of the country.

Lastly, we write to affirm that we are in constant dialogue about how the realities of contingent labor –and the financial conditions of the field as a whole--might alter our understanding of our membership categories, future programming, and financial structures of the association.

This seems like a great benefit. As an adjunct, I am constantly balancing the demands of work and life with the constant fear of financial duress. Even something as simple as a membership fee can't always make the monthly cut of what has to be paid. My question, "how do I access these benefits, i.e. The survey and the Job bank?"
