ATHE Announces Award Winners

The ATHE Vice President for Awards, Dani Snyder-Young, on behalf of the ATHE Awards Committee and the ATHE Governing Council, is pleased to announce the winners of 7 prestigious awards for 2014. ATHE members and other conference attendees are invited to the annual awards ceremony on Thursday, July 24 at 5 p.m. at the annual conference.

The Ellen Stewart Award for Career Achievement in Professional Theatre will be given to Luis Valdez, founder and artistic director of El Teatro Campesino.

The Career Achievement Award in Educational Theatre will be given to Harry J. Elam, Jr., who is currently serving as the Freeman-Thornton Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Olive H. Palmer Professor in the Humanities, Professor of Drama, and Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education at Stanford University.

The Oscar Brockett Outstanding Teacher of Theatre in Higher Education will be given to Gretel Geist-Rutledge, Professor Emerita of Production Design: Costume at Michigan State University.

The Award for Leadership in Community-Based Theatre and Civic Engagement will be given to John Somers. In the United Kingdom and overseas John has developed, with students and with professional actors, a range of Interactive Theatre programs on issues such as alcohol abuse, runaway children, bioethics, self harm, depression amongst farmers and stress and suicide in the veterinary profession.

The Excellence in Editing Award will be given to Northwestern University professor Harvey Young for his work editing The Cambridge Companion to African American Theatre.

The ATHE Outstanding Book Award will be given to Joshua Takano Chambers-Letson for his book, A Race So Different: Performance and Law in Asian America (New York University Press). The honorable mention for this award goes to Andrew Sofer for his book, Dark Matter: Invisibility in Drama, Theater and Performance (University of Michigan Press).

The ATHE Outstanding Article Award will be given to Jennifer Parker-Starbuck for her article, "Animal Ontologies and Media Representations: Robotics, Puppets, and the Real of War Horse," published in Theatre Journal, 65.3 (October 2013).

The Jane Chambers Playwriting Award will be given to Gina Young for her play, FEMMES: A Tragedy.
