News on the ATHE 2018 Conference in Boston, MA, August 1-5, 2018

After a productive Midyear Meeting of the 2018 Conference Committee (CC) in Boston January 12-14, planning is in full swing for a series of plenaries, workshops, performances, excursions, and other exciting events for our annual meeting in Boston, MA at the Westin Waterfront, August 1-5, 2018.

We received over 430 proposals from Members and Focus Groups around the conference theme: “Theatres of Revolution: Performance, Pedagogy and Protest”. Proposals have been ranked by Focus Groups leaders and assembled by ATHE Staff and the 2018 CC into a preliminary conference schedule.

Please expect acceptance notices for a robust ATHE 2018 Conference to arrive to proposers as scheduled by ‪February 15, 2018, with notifications of ATHE Grant Awards also as scheduled in March of 2018.

All Pre-Conference proposers, please look for an email from Kristy Masloski, our new ATHE Conference Planner, regarding Pre-Conference Events after acceptance notifications go out in mid-February. Some Pre-Conference Planners will be contacted separately in mid-February regarding their proposals and any impact to tentative dates and times provided, given the new Wednesday ‪start to the conference on August 1 (though ‪Sunday, August 5), 2018.

As we face increasing costs alongside often fixed or declining University budgets and changes in academic hiring practices, we are looking to diversify and expand our offering around exhibit space, sponsorship, and advertising. To do this and to help ensure that the conference remains affordable for all who want to participate, we’ve sought to expand the possibilities for sponsorship, ranging from wi-fi, videography, and A/V in the venue to supporting attendance from graduate students and historically underrepresented populations to sponsoring particular events, such as the Chairs and Deans’ Forum or GSSC Social. This year in Boston, we’re expecting attendance of approximately 800 people, with over 2000 following the conference through social media, and digital/online discussions.

We’re also open to other new and different sponsorship possibilities, and happy to discuss these with members and potential sponsors/exhibitors/advertisers. As we develop these opportunities, we’d like to ask you for your assistance. Do you know an individual or an organization that might be interested in reaching our membership? Can you present the brochure to your employer(s) and your alma mater, as well as passing it along to appropriate contacts you might have at corporate and charitable organizations.

ATHE's Electronic Technology Committee (ETC) is pleased to share the following opportunity with the membership!

We are excited to announce that the National Endowment of the Humanities is offering a summer institute on Digital Technologies in Theatre and Performance Studies this summer. Please share this information with anyone you think might be interested. We hope to assemble a diverse and dynamic group of participants representing a variety of disciplines and levels of professional experience from advanced graduate students to senior faculty.

The institute is free of charge to all accepted participants, and the NEH will provide a stipend of $2,100 to cover travel and living expenses. It will be held on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, GA from June 17 to 29. The application deadline is March 1, 2018.

The institute is for college and university faculty who would like to integrate digital technologies into their curricula, and who would like to gain a deeper understanding of the technologies and techniques to make this possible. The program assumes no prior expertise in digital media. Through presentations and hands-on workshops, the institute’s participants will gain valuable techniques and experience in how best to integrate digital methods and tools in teaching theatre studies and performance practice.

The project directors, Dr. David Saltz (University of Georgia) and Dr. Sarah Bay-Cheng (Bowdoin College), are leaders in the field of digital performance; they recently co-authored the book Performance and Media: Taxonomies for a Changing Field (University of Michigan Press, 2015). They will be joined by a faculty of twelve that includes many of the country’s leading experts on digital performance and scholarship.

The first week focuses on the impact of digital technologies on performance scholarship, and the second, on digital performance practices. Both weeks balance lectures, seminars, and hands-on workshops. Participants will leave the institute with specific exercises, lesson plans, and references to support continued development in their classrooms and their home institutions.
