Lisa D'Amour Wins OBIE; PearlDamour Leads Workshop and Performs Milton at ATHE 2013

The 2013 Conference Committee would like to take a moment to congratulate Lisa D’Amour on her recent OBIE award for best new American play for her play, Detroit. We are thrilled that Lisa will be attending the conference in Orlando along with her collaborator Katie Pearl. Pearl and D’Amour will offer their workshop, “Getting Out of the Way: A Performance Workshop” on Thursday afternoon (August 1) from 1:30 to 4:45 p m. In this workshop, PearlDamour will lead participants through a series of exercises in which architecture and objects take the lead. Participants will also have the chance to consider their own core artistic values, and experiment with how to let these values fuel a new work. The workshop is limited to 16 participants for a fee of $50 per person.

On Friday evening (August 2) at 10 p.m., Pearl and D’Amour will present Milton (a work in process), alongside a discussion of their past collaborative works. Milton is a monologue stitched together from dozens of interviews conducted in five different cities named Milton across the U.S., performed against the backdrop of video footage of the sky over each Milton. What do you dream of when you look at the sky? What is someone across the United States from you dreaming right now? This work-in-progress excerpt features a monologue devised from visits to three Miltons, performed by our very own conference participants! This performance is free and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Call for Performers – ATHE 2013 Orlando Conference – Respond by June 25

Are you a performer? Would you like a chance to be on the inside of a project being developed by PearlDamour, one of the guest artists coming to ATHE?

The OBIE winning performance making team of PearlDamour is seeking 2-3 actors to participate in a 15 minute in-process showing of their newest work, MILTON, taking place on Friday evening, August 2, from 10 pm – 11 pm.

About the project:

Throughout 2013 and 2014, PearlDamour is visiting 5 towns named Milton, meeting a diverse cross-section of people and talking to them about their lives and the world. We ask questions like: How did you get to Milton? If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be? The conversations and experiences we are having will be the inspiration for a performance that we will bring back to perform in each Milton and around the country. In our minds, these 5 Miltons stretch over and across the country, forming an earthbound constellation. The performance will tell the story of this constellation in a series of chapters. Like a song cycle or poem collection, the text will layer and shift together, accumulating emotional and narrative content. Picture three performers of different ages and races speaking and singing, often from among the audience, within an immersive environment of the day and night skies over each Milton moving in front, behind and above them. Sometimes it might feel like being in a planetarium. Sometimes it might feel like being at the opera. Sometimes it might feel like being at a family birthday barbecue, under a big sky.

About the showing:

MILTON is not a character-based show, so while performance experience is necessary, we do not require actors with classical training. People who have experience with experimental work will feel at home in this project, as will adventurous people who are experienced speaking and singing in front of others. We are hoping to work with performers of various ages, genders, and races. Proficiency at reading music will be very helpful.

About the rehearsals:

We will schedule an initial 2-hour rehearsal most likely over Skype before the conference (likely Tuesday or Wednesday 7/30 or 7/31), and have one or two final rehearsals in-person during the days on Thursday-Friday 8/1-2. We will be requesting that actors do some memorization before they arrive, to facilitate the in-person rehearsal.

Performer names will be added to the addendum for the program book, but conference registration payment is still required.

If you’d like to apply to perform in MILTON, please email Katie Pearl ( by June 25 with the following info:
