Professional Development Committee Reports on Arts Education Partnership

The Arts Education Partnership (AEP) Meeting (spring 2012 in Washington, D.C.), entitled "Are We There Yet? Arts Evidence and the Road to Student Success" provided an outstanding forum for dialogue and included presentations by arts educators from throughout the United States. The mission of the Arts Education Partnership is to demonstrate and promote the essential role of the arts in enabling every student to succeed in school, life and work in the diverse and global economies and societies of the 21st century. The Arts Education Partnership includes arts, education, business, philanthropic and government organizations that have national scope and impact as well as state and local partnerships that promote education policies supportive of arts education.

With the goal of strengthening our nation’s public education system, AEP’s twice yearly national forum convenes the country’s foremost leaders in arts education to discuss what works in arts education and to advance best practices that help ensure a complete education for every child in America. Their work in ensuring a high quality education that includes the arts for every student is providing champions of arts education with research, policy, and advocacy information in 49 countries including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Spain, India, China, and South Korea. Explore today to learn about the educational outcomes associated with arts learning for teachers and students. AEP launched this new research and policy clearing house in April 2012. It is the nation’s first on research and policy as a clearinghouse focused entirely on student and educator outcomes associated with arts learning in and out of school. It is a powerful resource to help your advocacy and grant writing.

Multiple research studies spanning the education system from pre-kindergarten through high school suggest that students involved in arts study are more engaged in school and more motivated to learn than comparison groups of students.

The fall National Forum, ARTS LEARNING WITHOUT BORDERS, was centered around integrative thinking and happened on September 13 and 14 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The fall forum, which occursedduring National Arts in Education Week, featrued unique initiatives among education, arts, business, cultural, government, and philanthropic sectors that are thinking and working differently from their traditional roles. Arts and education leaders are looking at these sectors to reimagine a new kind of learning environment that uses arts education to shape a nation of integrative, creative thinkers.
