Bilingual Adaptation of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

Dear colleagues,

I’ve already been in touch with some of you about this, but wanted to make sure that as many of you as possible know about LA COMEDIA OF ERRORS.

The final project that I directed as the artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, LA COMEDIA OF ERRORS is a bilingual adaptation of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS. The brilliant Lydia Garcia and I co-adapted it from the Play on! translation of Shakespeare by Christina Anderson. It is truly bilingual, about 50% in English and 50% in Spanish, with the express goal of it being understandable and enjoyable no matter how much or little of each language a given audience member knows. We’ve been touring it to low-income community centers with a high percentage of Spanish speakers in Southern Oregon, but we're also performing it on our campus in Ashland, on the set of whatever play happens to be in the theater on any given day. We knew that it would be joyful and moving for our community audiences, but it is also delighting our primarily English-speaking audiences on campus, and having huge emotional impact in both cases. It feels quite urgent, frankly, given all that is happening in our country right now. The adaptation and the production are, quite honestly, among the proudest achievements of my entire career.

Lydia and I wanted to make the script available to you in the hope that it might interest you for a future production.  It runs 85 minutes. We did it with 10 actors but it could easily be produced with a smaller or a much larger cast. We also have a production video that we can share. To request a script, a video, or to discuss licensing you can reach our agent Charles Kopelman at charles.kopelman@abramsartistsagency.com or you are welcome to write me back at my new work email in New York City (brauch@theperelman.org) with any questions. Thank you for considering it.

Warmly,

Bill Rauch
