The Women and Theatre Program of ATHE (Association for Theatre in Higher Education) invites submissions for the 2017 JANE CHAMBERS CONTEST for FEMINIST PLAYWRITING (deadline March 1, 2017)
First given in 1984, the JANE CHAMBERS AWARD recognizes feminist plays & performance texts created by women writers that present significant opportunities for female performers. Given in memory of playwright Jane Chambers, the Contest welcomes full-length plays including experimentations in form and subject matter. Feminism is understood to cross an array of class, sex, race, national, ethnic, theatrical, and/or geographic perspectives. The annual Winner receives $1000 & a concert reading of the play at ATHE’s annual conference. The winning student play is presented at the WTP pre-conference.
Last year's Award Winning Play,
NO CANDY by Emma Stanton rose from among over 400 submissions and was given a staged reading at The Chicago Palmer House featuring the talent of local Chicago Artists. For more information about last year's winners as well as FAQ's about the contest, you can visit

This year's awardee will receive a reading during the upcoming ATHE Conference in Las Vegas, NV August 3-6, 2017.
