CALL FOR PAPERS – ATHE 2018 – Theatre as a Liberal Art DEBUT PANEL – Boston, Massachusetts
The Theatre as a Liberal Art Focus Group of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) invites submissions for its debut panel at the 2018 ATHE Conference in Boston, Mass. Submissions are solicited from new and emerging artist-scholars who have neither published articles with ATHE nor previously presented at ATHE. Junior faculty and graduate students in higher education are encouraged to participate in the Debut Panel. The deadline for submission is April 30, 2018.
Papers must address theatre as a liberal art, but there are several ways to approach this goal. Consider teaching approaches and pedagogical practices in theatre classrooms – including acting, directing, theatre history, design, technology, and intersections among them. Papers might also examine administrative challenges of theatre as a liberal art, teaching in a small department, or interdisciplinary campus work. Papers may engage explicitly the conference theme – Theatres of Revolution: Performance, Pedagogy, and Protest – but thematic papers are not required. What are the revolutions in your classrooms, pedagogy, department, campus? In what ways are you resisting, reinventing, revolutionizing your work with students?
Submissions will be evaluated by a jury of theatre scholars. The top three papers will be presented at the national conference in Boston. The panel will also include a response from a senior scholar in Theatre as a Liberal Art. Papers should be standard conference length for a 20 minute presentation (8-10 pages). Those selected should plan to attend the conference in Boston, MA August 1-5, 2018. Information about registration and further information on the conference may be found at http://www.athe.org.
Please send your paper as a .pdf email attachment to the TLA Focus Group Representative Janice Pohl (janicep@elmhurst.edu) with “TLA Debut Panel Submission” in the subject line. The selected panelists will be notified by mid-May 2018.
Panelists may receive a small honorarium to help defray the cost of conference attendance.
