ATHE has advocated for a number of causes and participated in a number of advocacy events.

  • Support of Esperanza Center lawsuit (went to federal court claiming First Amendment and Equal Protection rights violations after funding denied by the City of San Antonio in 1997 for producing a gay and lesbian film festival. View the sample letter (.pdf file).
  • National Arts Advocacy Day every March

  • 280 puppet protesters from the Arts in Action Democratic Convention Intervention Festival who were arrested and whose puppets were destroyed
  • The Singapore Theatre artist arrested for attempting to stage a play about marital violence
  • Age discrimination against Hollywood writers
  • Day (With) Out Art / World AID Day commemorated on December 1, 2000
  • Challenged the University of Michigan Board of Regents targeting of Professor David Halperin's English 317 class titled "How to be Gay: Homosexuality and Initiation"
  • Poets arrested in China for organizing a poetry symposium
  • The Missouri Arts Council funding diverted from Hothouse Theatre's production of Bent due to gay themes and male nudity
  • The First Amendment case over the exclusion of the work of artists Sharon Rupp and Janette Hopper from a city hall exhibit in Pasco, Washington
  • Relief efforts for the damaged buildings of arts organizations in Houston that suffered the damage during Tropical Storm Allison
