COMBINED APPLICATION: Grants for Pre-Conferences, Debut Panels, or other Specific Sessions

Deadline: November 1, 2015

ATHE Grants Guidelines – Conference 2016

*Please use this new shared form if you would like to apply for a grant for any of the following: a pre-conference, a debut panel, or a specific session. If you want to make a basic AV request for a Focus-Group sponsored session or a Multi-Disciplinary session, you can do that on the Session Proposal Form.*

About The Different Types of Grants:

Pre-Conference Grants

ATHE announces the availability of a $6,000 pool to be used by its focus groups that seek to offer pre- or post-conference sessions scheduled in conjunction with ATHE's annual conference. A single focus group may submit an application, but ATHE would also accept a submission from two or more focus groups wanting to offer a combined pre- or post-conference.

There is neither a minimum nor a maximum grant amount, but the charge of these funds is to assist Focus Groups in expanding their educational focus. These funds should foster creative, pedagogical, and/or scholarly activities that hold true to our organization's stated vision, mission, values, and goals.

These grants are available for distribution, and may only support activities that occur between August 8, 2016 and August 16, 2016. Applications may be fully funded or accepted with only partial funding based on how well the application meets the established criteria.

Debut Panel Grants

Any focus group is welcome to apply for a grant to support a debut panel for emerging scholars in the field. You could apply for a session guest pass, for example, or for other supporting funds.

Session Grants

You are welcome to apply for a session guest pass ($50) or more than one. You are also welcome to apply for a full-conference guest pass ($75). Those passes can be a great way to enrich a panel by supporting the attendance of someone who might not otherwise have access to ATHE or be inclined to attend. Request a full-conference guest pass only for someone who will present in multiple sessions. Or you can apply for something else we might not anticipate but that would support your session. You may not request more than $500 total.

Evaluation Criteria

Every year grant applications are considered by the Conference Committee. This year the conference committee will consider the following as it weighs grant requests:

  • Is the proposal clear and complete?
  • Does the proposal compellingly argue for the value of the grant for the broader ATHE conference community?
  • Does the proposal reflect priorities of ATHE’s mission and strategic plan (www.athe.org)?
  • Does the proposal have the ability to support a community or constituency historically underrepresented at ATHE?

Other Info and Requirements:

  • Graduate students seeking assistance with conference attendance should not apply here but instead should apply to the ATHE Student Fellowship Fund.
  • A proposal by a single focus group is acceptable. Proposals by more than one focus group planning a joint pre-conference or other joint effort will also be considered for funding.
  • Proposals may be fully or partially funded.
  • The number of grants a group has already been awarded will be considered when determining funding. However, groups who have received prior grants are still eligible to receive funding.
  • Each Grant Request application should indicate the sponsoring group(s), provide an itemized budget including all proposed sources of support and income, and outline a calendar for the proposed activities.
  • Typically, these grants are not allotted to support attendance at the conference by individuals already affiliated with academic institutions. These grants have historically been allotted to support the attendance of individuals who would be less likely to attend a conference explicitly focused on theatre in higher education. That said, exceptions may be made depending on many factors, including all-conference programming needs, realities of current institutional supports, and the nature of the argument put forward in the grant proposal. Feel free to contact Conference VP Kelly Howe with questions.

The 2016 Conference Committee Vice President, Kelly Howe, will be forwarded the Grant Requests following the November 1, 2015 online submission deadline. Applicants will be notified of the funding decision no later than March 1, 2015.
