Over 1,000 Attend ATHE's 25th Anniversary Conference

Split Britches in Lost Lounge

ATHE’s 25th Anniversary Conference, which returned to the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, was a huge success with over 1,000 attendees! Performance highlights of the conference included a keynote of Split Britches’ Lost Lounge, where Peggy Shaw and Lois Weaver were joined onstage by co-founder Deb Margolin, a performance especially created for ATHE by Reverend Billy, as well as a performative lecture by Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Roberto Sifuentes to launch their new book, Exercises for Rebel Artists: Radical Performance Pedagogy. The experimental format of plenary and focus-group/multidisciplinary plenary response sessions worked very well, with provocations by Marin Blazevic, Pascale Lecoq, Mshai Mwangola and Miguel Rubio during the plenary discussion on “Interdisciplinarity on Global Contexts” feeding into the many smaller sessions on “Local Contexts.” As well, the presidential plenary was a great reminder of ATHE’s legacy as several of the past presidents gathered to speak about ATHE at 25. There were over 300 exciting panels and a variety of performances and presentations throughout.

The ATHE twitter feed maintained a lively discussion among attendees, exhibitors, and those following and participating from afar and the Video promo contest produced amazing work from a variety of different panels. Please fill out the conference survey as your feedback is very valuable to us. We’re delighted to announce as well that thanks to Editor James Peck, Theatre Topics will be publishing a special section on the conference’s legacy, including provocations from the plenary panelists; a roundtable discussion from the conference featuring Jill Dolan, Alisa Solomon, Peggy Shaw, Lois Weaver, Bill Talen and Savitri D; and a discussion of the state of the field from the Conference Vice Presidents. Thanks again for your participation.
