Conference 2012 in Washington, D.C.
Members of the 2012 Conference Committee at the 2011 Conference in Chicago
The Conference Planning Committee for the 2012 conference left the Palmer House with a wealth of ideas, generated at several brainstorming sessions that included Focus Group Conference Planners as well as the membership at large. Now, as the committee takes the next step of making these ideas into a cohesive plan for 2012, several exciting themes and initiatives are emerging.
Remember, conference proposals are due November 1, 2011. You can submit a conference proposal here.
In keeping with the conference title, "Performance as/is Civic Engagement: Advocate, Collaborate, Educate," we looked to the time and location of the conference for inspiration. While August in Washington, D.C. may mean a hot and sticky conference for us this year, it also positions us just blocks and weeks away from one of the most engaging performances we create as a nation - a presidential election. Lots of excitement was generated around the many ideas articulated at the 2011 Conference. Here are just a few:
- A plenary session dedicated to practical workshop techniques for arts advocates to use in a variety of lobbying opportunities...
- Workshops exploring skills presented by members of the international embassy community...
- A series of performances/readings exploring and responding to the Foundational Texts of our nation...
- A communal event or demonstration asserting ATHE's presence in our capitol city...
Again, these are just some of the many ideas we're exploring. As details become more concrete, anticipate calls for participation on any and all levels. I'm very energized by these prospects, and I certainly hope every ATHE member will find something that attracts or engages them.
