The 2014 Conference Committee and 28th Conference Highlights

Highlights include: Keynote Presentation by Luis Alfaro, Ten Focus Group Debut Panels, Four Paid Workshops, and Conference Performances.

First time-attendees: If you are a first-time attendee, the Conference Orientation session on Thursday, July 24, from 1:30 - 3 p.m., will help familiarize you with the flow of the conference sessions, the not-to-be-missed keynote, and awards ceremony, as well as an introduction to ATHE’s 22 Focus Groups, the grassroots foundation of this organization. ATHE Leadership Institute® Pre-Conference Workshop
ATHE’s Professional Development Committee, chaired by Vice President James Peck, and Co-Directors Barbara O. Korner, Penn State University, and Mark Heckler, Valparaiso University, present the 14th ATHE Leadership Institute®. The ATHE Leadership Institute® begins on Tuesday, July 22, at 1:30 p.m. and ends at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 24th. Designed for new and aspiring theatre chairs and administrators, this workshop matches participants with leaders in the field who have several years of experience as chairs, deans, directors, and provosts. Arizona State University (ASU) Tour of Innovative Programs
ATHE Leadership Institute® Alumni and all ATHE Conference attendees are invited to participate in the Arizona State University Tour of Innovative Programs and lunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 24. Registration includes bus transportation to and from the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Hotel to Arizona State University and the Leadership Institute® luncheon. Registration cost for this special offer is $50.

ASU, the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and the School of Film, Dance and Theatre are known for their innovation and push to break new ground. This interactive tour will include multiple stops, with opportunities at each for demonstrations and question/answer sessions with representatives of each program. Attendees will rotate through each program in small groups.

Focus Group Pre- and Post-Conferences

ATHE’s Focus Groups use the annual conference as a mechanism for focusing on their disciplinary-specific topics in pre- and post-conference offerings. This year, the following groups will host pre- or post-conferences: Association for Asian Performance; Association of Theatre Movement Educators; Black Theatre Association; Design, Technology and Management; Directing Program and Acting Program (joint); Dramaturgy; Latina/o Focus Group; LGBTQ Focus Group; Interactive Theatre Subcommittee and Theatre as Social Change Focus Group (joint); Performance Studies Focus Group; Playwrights and Creative Teams Focus Group; Theatre as a Liberal Art and Theatre History (joint); Women and Theatre Program; and the Professional Development Committee.

ATHE Focus Group Membership Meetings
ATHE’s Focus Groups will hold membership meetings on Friday and Saturday from 12 - 1:30 p.m. and Sunday from 8 - 9:30 and 9:45 - 11:15 a.m. These special interest groups like Acting, Directing, Dramaturgy, Black Theatre Association, Latina/o and others, are your entryway to ATHE.

Playwriting and Other Performances
Staged performance has always been an integral element of ATHE conferences. Throughout the four days of programming, attendees can partake in a variety of presentations including the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award Staged Play Reading, the Playwrights and Creative Teams (PACT) New Play Development Workshop Showcase, and the SETC Getchell Award Winning Play Showcase.

Paid Workshops
Paid Workshops offer conference participants a 3-hour concentrated block of time to focus on a particular theatrical approach or technique, be it playwriting, silent story-telling, gesture as cultural memory, or ensemble activist theatre. The four workshops offered for a fee this year have limited registrations and registrants are accepted on a first come, first served basis. Register early to reserve your spot.

ATHE Focus Group Debut Panels
Debut panels from ATHE’s Focus Groups offer new scholars the opportunity, some for the first time, to present at this conference. The following focus groups are hosting debut panels: Acting Program; American Theatre and Drama Society, Black Theatre Association, and Latina/o Focus Group (joint); Directing Program; Dramaturgy; Music Theatre/Dance; Performance Studies Focus Group; Religion and Theatre; Theatre as a Liberal Art; Theatre History; Women and Theatre Program and LGBTQ (joint).

ATHE Annual Membership Meeting
Saturday, July 26 | 10 - 11:45 a.m.
The Annual Membership Meeting offers members an opportunity to meet the Governing Council, thank outgoing officers, and hear from the ATHE President about the state of the Association. Participate in dreaming the future of ATHE while enjoying a cool fruit smoothie!
