The Black Theatre Association (BTA) seeks essay submissions for its 8th Annual Debut Panel.  We encourage all graduate students and non-tenured faculty working on African American theatre and performance studies who have never presented at ATHE or a national conference to apply.  Papers may consider any aspect of African American dramatic criticism, theatre history, plays, playwrights, performers, directors, designers, etc.  The highest quality papers will be selected by our distinguished panel of theatre scholar judges: Harry J. Elam, Jr., Olive H. Palmer Professor in the Humanities and Chair of the Drama Department (Stanford University); Sandra G. Shannon, Professor of English (Howard University) and Editor of Theatre Topics; and David Krasner, Associate Professor of Performing Arts (Emerson College).  Accepted panelists will present their papers at the ATHE conference, July 31-August 3, 2008, in Denver, Colorado.   All essays submissions should be ten to twelve pages in length, typed, double-spaced (including block quotes), and use either Chicago or MLA style citations.  Please e-mail your contact information and complete essay submission as an MSWord attachment to Melinda Wilson, BTA Conference Planner, at mwilson@csus.edu. Please type “BTA Debut Panel” in the subject heading. Deadline for submissions is Friday, February 29, 2008.

The Directing Program (DP) is trying something new this year in creating a Debut Panel for new or adapted directing exercises for the Conference. If interested, please email a one page description of your directing exercise (with goals, materials & space requirements, procedures, and expected outcomes) to Mark Frankos, our Graduate Student Representative (mark.frankos@gmail.com), and Jerrold Scott, DP Conference Planner (jerrold.scott@case.edu). Graduate students and faculty presenting at ATHE for the first time are eligible to participate in the Debut Panel. We plan to offer two exercises in a one hour and fifteen minute block, so each demonstration of the exercise will be limited to 20 minutes to allow for discussion. A committee will vet the submissions and select those that we think will be the most interesting and useful to our membership. The deadline for the panel submissions has been extended to MAR 1. Please submit directly to the DP planners. Questions? Please contact Mark at mark.frankos@gmail.com or Jerrold at jerrold.scott@case.edu.

The Latino/a Focus Group invites submissions for its competitively selected Debut
Panel from scholars who have not yet published articles or presented at an ATHE conference. The postmark deadline for submissions is extended to March 1, 2007. Papers should be an appropriate length for a fifteen-minute presentation
(typically about eight pages) and address Latino/a American or Latin American subject matter. Transnational, comparative, and diasporic approaches are welcome.
Both graduate students and faculty members are eligible to submit.
A jury of theatre scholars including Tiffany Ana Lopez, University of California, Riverside, Alberto Sandoval Sánchez, Mt. Holyoke College, and Francine D’ Aness (Dartmouth College) will evaluate the submissions and select three papers to be presented at the conference. They will also be present to moderate the discussion at the conference. This scholarly exchange will provide an excellent mentorship opportunity for emerging scholars. Students and faculty members from non-performance based departments are also encouraged to submit work. Authors of selected papers will
read them at the conference. All
presenters must register and pay the appropriate fees for the
conference. Conference presenters should be ATHE members unless they
work outside the academic study of theatre. For information on the conference (including applicable costs), and the Latino Focus Group see
http://www.athe.org.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Focus Group invites submissions for its Debut Panel from scholars who have not yet presented at a national conference. The deadline for submissions is February 25, 2008. The theme for the 2008 ATHE Conference is "Difficult Dialogues: Theatre and the Art of Engagement." How do theatre artists and scholars engage in political, cultural, and artistic discussions about gender and sexuality? How successfully are we engaged in multiple and overlapping dialogues around issues of race, class, gender, geography, religion, age, and disability? And what role can queer scholarship and performance play in engaging our students, our audiences, and our adversaries? Although we especially welcome papers on the conference theme, all proposals on LGBTQ theatre and performance will receive equal consideration. Both graduate students and faculty members are eligible to submit. Submissions will be evaluated and selected for presentation by a jury of theatre scholars: Dr. Bud Coleman (University of Colorado-Boulder), Dr. Noreen Barnes (Virginia Commonwealth University), and Dr. John Fletcher (Louisiana State University). Professor Coleman will participate as the respondent during the panel session, and Professor Fletcher will serve as chair. Selection of papers is competitive. Authors of selected papers will present them at the conference. All presenters must register and pay the appropriate fees for the conference. Conference presenters should be ATHE members unless they work outside the academic study of theatre. For information on the conference (including applicable costs), please visit http://www.athe.org. Papers should be an appropriate length for a 15- to 20-minute presentation (approximately eight pages). Send four copies of your complete paper and a cover sheet by February 25 to: Jordan Schildcrout, 012 Kantner Hall, School of Theater, Ohio University, Athens, OH 45701. To maintain anonymity, please do not put your name on the paper. On the cover sheet, include the title of your paper, your name, address, telephone, and email address. Applicants will be informed of the judges' decisions by April 25, 2008. Questions or concerns can be directed to LGBT Conference Planner Dr. Jordan Schildcrout at
schildcr@ohio.edu.

The Women & Theatre Program (WTP) invites submissions for its Debut Panel at the conference.  This panel is open to students, practitioners and junior faculty who have not presented at a national conference. Suggested approaches include, but are not limited to:

Three to four papers will be selected for the Debut Panel, and a senior scholar from WTP will serve as respondent. To submit, please send a 250 word abstract in an email with the subject heading Debut Panel to Natka Bianchini at ndb@umd.edu by Friday, February 29, 2008. Feel free to contact Natka with any questions regarding the submission process or WTP in general.
