Dance the Vote – Promoting Voter Awareness Through Art
Tuesday, July 12, 2016
I am writing to share about a new project I currently working on called "Dance the Vote" to see if it might be of interest to ATHE members to adopt for their classes or community. The “Dance to Vote” campaign seeks to raise public awareness by promoting voter awareness and registration through performing dance as well as spoken word that addresses the history and significance of voting.
This project brings together local artists who seek to make a difference during this election season by getting people registered and committed to vote for the upcoming 2016 Primaries and General Elections.
Our campaign kick off was held July 2nd from 2-5pm outside the iconic Vintage Vinyl record store in St. Louis and was a big success. Many people stopped by to check out our event which also attracted passersby and we registered new voters. The event featured choreographers and dancers from Ashleyliane Dance Company, Karlovsky and Company Dance, Beyond Measure Dance Theater, and the AfroKuumba Dancers. The choreography was based on various themes of the voting experience, including the experience of African Americans and women around voting, voting rights, voter suppression, voting in other countries, among other themes.
The event also included additional various performers, special guests, and spoken word artists including African American veteran Chris Ware, playwright Mariah Richardson, college professor Pam Garvey, disability rights activist Ana Jennings, acclaimed Bolivian musician Matamba, and Alderwoman Lyda Krewson who is running for mayor.
Future performance locations in St. Louis will be announced to the public and will include First Friday's at Grand Center, St. Louis Black Pride, Swap Meets, and even a Whole Foods.
I am including the press release, a few photos, and a couple articles that were written about the project. Please let me know if I can answer any questions or provide any additional information about "Dance the Vote." It would be thrilling to see more college campuses engage artistically in this crucial election and this is one way.
