Call for Proposals
The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) welcomes your proposal for our 2017 Annual Conference. Please complete one (1) Proposal Form for each proposed session. Please note that you must apply using this form by November 1, 2016, for proposals of any of the following:
- Single Focus Group Concurrent Sessions
- Multidisciplinary Concurrent Sessions (sessions for which you have secured two sponsoring focus groups)
- ANY Preconference events for which you either A) seek space at the official conference hotel OR B) are applying for grant funds on through ATHE’s grant proposal process (for which the deadline is ALSO November 1, 2016)
- Meetings of ATHE committees that require meetings at the conference
- Focus Group Business Meetings
- Committee Meetings
The ATHE 2017 Conference will offer concurrent sessions, workshops, performances and keynote opportunities. All proposals will be ranked and proposals will be reviewed by the focus groups and/or committees you have indicated as sponsors. ANY session for which you are hoping to have a room or any other physical space scheduled for ATHE 2017 MUST be proposed through this form. Do not assume that ANY session will be automatically scheduled if you do not submit a proposal, EVEN in the cases of membership meetings, committee meetings, etc. More below.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS for THEATRE TOPICS CO-EDITOR
Theatre Topics is seeking a new journal Co-editor to serve a two-year term beginning August 2017, followed by a two-year term as Editor beginning in August 2019.
Theatre Topics is a peer-reviewed journal and an official publication of the Association of Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE). The journal publishes articles that explore subjects at the intersection of theory and practice such as dramaturgy, devising, research based practice, and pedagogy. Topics is published three times a year (two general issues and one special issue). The Editor is responsible for two of these issues while the Co-editor is responsible for one issue per year. Both Editor and Co-Editor share in the adjudication of manuscripts, and are also serve as ex officio members of the ATHE Research and Publications Committee.
Given the range spanned by articles appearing in the journal, there is no restriction on the editor’s own area of expertise. The successful applicant must have support from her or his home institution (such as course relief or research/travel assistance).

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS for THEATRE JOURNAL CO-EDITOR
Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Co-editor of Theatre Journal. The new Co-editor will appear on the masthead from January 2018 through December 2019, and then will become Editor of the journal, serving from January 2020 through December 2021.
The work, however, will begin in August 2017. The Editor and Co-editor alternate in the preparation of issues for the press and share in the adjudication of manuscripts. The Co-editor also serves as an ex officio member of the ATHE Research and Publications Committee.
Theatre Journal is a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal featuring contemporary and historical studies and theoretical inquiries that analyze theatre and performance. Given the range of topics published, there is no restriction on the Co-editor’s own area of expertise. The successful applicant must have support (such as course relief or research/travel assistance) from his or her home institution. Spectacular Stars of the Page and Stage: Call for ATHE 2017 Award Nominations
Who do you consider a “spectacular” artist, teacher, or scholar? Whose work do you seek out and admire, whether on stage or in scholarship? Whose achievements most inspire you to “reach for the stars” and strive for excellence in your own work? Here is your opportunity to honor that individual’s accomplishments.
ATHE gives four prestigious awards recognizing the outstanding lifetime or career achievements of individuals whose excellent work has made a sustained and meaningful impact on the fields of educational and professional theatre:
Outstanding Teacher of Theatre in Higher Education
Career Achievement in Higher Education
Ellen Stewart Award for Career Achievement in Professional Theatre
Leadership in Community-Based Theatre and Civic Engagement
To nominate a “superstar” for one of these awards, please submit one letter of nomination and solicit up to ten letters of support. More information on criteria and the details of each award is located on the ATHE website. The deadline for submissions is February 15, 2017.
ATHE awards excellence in scholarly projects published in the last year:
Outstanding Article in a Scholarly Journal
The deadline for submissions for Outstanding Book is December 31, 2016 and the deadline for submissions for Outstanding Article is February 15, 2017.
ATHE recognizes excellence in editing of an individual project, or in sustained excellence for a lifetime body of work. These categories are awarded every other year, with publications from the previous two years eligible. In 2017 we will be honoring career excellence in editing:

The deadline for submissions for Excellence in Editing is February 15, 2017.
ATHE honors excellence in Playwriting via two awards:
ATHE Excellence in Playwriting
The deadline for submissions for the ATHE Excellence in Playwriting Award is November 1, 2016. The deadline the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award is March 1, 2017.
ATHE and ASTR will also honor excellence in digital scholarship:
Excellence in Digital Theatre and Performance Scholarship
The deadline for submissions for Excellence in Digital Scholarship is February 15, 2017.
