Theater Alive: Theater, Media, and Survival
Call for Panels/Call for Papers
The Performance Studies Focus Group (PSFG) welcomes submissions of complete sessions or individual papers for the 2010 meeting of the Association for Theater in Higher Education (ATHE). ATHE’s theme this year is “Theater Alive: Theater, Media, Survival” and will take place at the Hyatt Century City in Los Angeles from August 3 to 6. We welcome submissions on all topics, but are particularly interested in topics that engage with this year’s theme. We welcome sessions or papers that explore contemporary or historical topics. Questions or issues sessions or papers might address include:
Historical and/or theoretical explorations of theater and performance as media
The social efficacy of performance: performance as a survival strategy
Artists’ use of new technologies and the interrogation of “the live”
Intersections of media, documentation, and performance
Reflections on the history of the fields of theater and performance studies: what is at stake in participating on the margins?
The relationship between scholarship and practices of “performance” (broadly conceived), and the survival of theater as a medium
The future of theater and performance studies in college curricula
Performances that reanimate the dead, the lost, the forgotten
Histories of intermediality, re-mediation, and media crossroads
There are three ways to participate in ATHE through PSFG:
- Submit a PSFG session. Curators of panels should submit directly to the ATHE website: link. The deadline for complete panel submissions is November 1.
- Submit a multidisciplinary session. These panels will be sponsored by PSFG and at least two additional Focus Groups/Committees/Affiliate Members. You must contact a representative from each Focus Group/Committee/Affiliate Member in advance of submitting your multidisciplinary proposal. A list of Focus Groups can be found here: http://athe.org/getinvolved/focusgroups/index. A list of Affiliate Members can be found here: http://athe.org/getinvolved/affiliatemembers. A list of Committees can be found here: http://athe.org/getinvolved/governingcouncil/index
- After making contact with the participating groups, curators should submit complete panels directly to the ATHE website. The deadline for complete panel submissions is November 1.
- Submit an individual paper. Though we do recommend the submission of complete sessions, the Conference Planner will do her very best to curate panels composed of individual paper submissions. If you wish to submit an individual paper, send a 300-word abstract and curriculum vitae to Paige McGinley by October 22.
Audio-Visual Requests
Requests for Audio-Visual equipment must be made at the time of session submission. Note that a fee is charged for many pieces of equipment, including LCD projectors for Powerpoint; the schedule of fees is listed on the session proposal form (http://athe.org/conference/index). To offset these costs, however, ATHE is offering grants for Audio-Visual equipment. The form for requesting these grants can be found on the ATHE website. The deadline for Audio-Visual Grant Requests is November 1.
